What is the duty of care in the fitness industry?
In the fitness industry, the duty of care is the legal obligation of fitness professionals to take reasonable steps to protect their clients from foreseeable risks of injury at a fitness centre. This includes ensuring that the facilities and equipment are safe, providing adequate supervision, enforcing fitness centre rules and making sure that clients are aware of any potential risks.
Fitness professionals have a duty to ensure that their clients are aware of the risks involved in any activity, and to take reasonable steps to minimise those risks. This includes providing adequate supervision, ensuring clients are aware of rules/regulations and ensuring that safety equipment is properly used.
If a client is injured as a result of negligence on the part of the fitness professional, they may be able to claim compensation for their injuries. Always listen to the advice, fitness centre rules and information provided by your fitness professional – they want you to stay responsible, safe and injury-free!
What is etiquette at the gym for group exercise classes?
Working out in a group setting can be a great way to get motivated and stay on track with your fitness goals. However, there are a few etiquette rules that should be followed in order to make sure everyone has a positive experience
Here are a few key points to remember:
- Arrive on time or early for class
- This gives you time to sign in, warm up and be ready to go when class starts. It also allows the instructor to give you any individualised instruction that you may need.
- Be respectful of others around you
- This includes being aware of personal space and not being disruptive during class.
- Follow the instructions of the instructor
- This helps ensure that you are getting the most out of the class and that everyone remains safe.
- Be prepared for class
- This means having the proper attire and equipment. It also means being hydrated and having eaten enough to give you energy to power through.
- Clean up after yourself
- Wipe down any equipment you used and put away any props or weights that were brought out.
By following these simple etiquette rules, you can make sure that everyone has a positive and enjoyable experience when working out in a group setting.
Fitness centre gym rules and regulations

- Guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times if visiting outside of staffed hours.
- Please respect the equipment and property of the fitness centre and refrain from damaging or tampering with any of it.
- Only water is allowed inside the fitness centre gym. Food and drink are not permitted past reception.
- Please wipe down all equipment after use and return it to its proper place.
- In order to maintain a comfortable environment for all guests, please be aware of your personal hygiene.
- Please be considerate of other guests and keep unnecessary noise to a minimum.
- Be aware of other members when using your phone inside the fitness centre gym.
- No smoking is permitted inside the fitness centre gym.

Fitness centre gym risk assessment
A fitness centre or gym is a place where people go to work out and stay in shape. However, there are certain risks associated with using these facilities. It is important to be aware of these risks and take proper precautions to avoid injury.
Some of the risks associated with utilising fitness centres and gyms include:
- Slips, trips and falls
- Muscle strains
- Cardiovascular problems
Slips, trips and falls
Wet floors, loose carpets or mats, and cluttered equipment can all lead to slips, trips and falls. It is important to keep the fitness centre clean and free of hazards.
Muscle strains
Lifting weights that are too heavy or using exercise machines improperly can lead to muscle strains. It is important to use proper form when working out and to warm up and stretch before using any weight-bearing equipment.
Cardiovascular problems
Some people with underlying cardiovascular conditions can experience problems when exercising.
By taking proper precautions and following rules, you can minimise the risks associated with fitness centre and gym use. Remember to always warm up and stretch before working out, use proper form, and lift weights that are appropriate for your strength level.
If you have any underlying health conditions, be sure to get a medical check-up before starting any fitness training program or ask our staff for advice.
Rules for fitness classes during COVID-19
As fitness facilities have reopened, it’s important to be aware of the new rules and guidelines that have been put in place to help keep everyone safe.
Here are some things to keep in mind if you’re planning on attending a fitness class with COVID-19 regulations in place:
- Make sure to check the fitness facility’s website or call ahead to see what their policies are for classes. Some places may require advance registration or have reduced capacity due to social distancing guidelines.
- We may recommend you to wear a face mask when you enter the fitness facility, unless you are out of breath. This is to protect yourself and others in case you happen to be asymptomatic.
- Use hand sanitiser to ensure your maintaining your personal hygiene. This along with increased cleaning and regular hand hygiene ensures the gym is a safe environment to work out.
- Be sure to maintain a safe distance from other people in the class. Most fitness facilities will have markers on the floor to indicate where you should stand or sit and maintain physical distancing through social distancing guidelines.
- Wash your hands before and after the class, and avoid touching your face during the workout.
- Bring your own water bottle and towel to avoid using common fitness centre amenities.
By following these guidelines, you can help keep yourself and others safe while still being able to enjoy a fitness class. However, if at any time you feel unwell or unsafe, we ask that you immediately contact our friendly staff at our gyms.
